Our History

The Ethiopian Diaspora Service was established in response to the growing need for a structured approach to engage and support Ethiopians living abroad. As migration patterns shifted and the Ethiopian diaspora expanded, it became evident that a dedicated service was necessary to address the unique challenges faced by these communities. Over the years, the service has evolved, reflecting changes in global dynamics and the increasing importance of the diaspora in national development.

The establishment of the service coincided with Ethiopia's broader efforts to strengthen its international relations and promote economic growth through diaspora engagement. Recognizing the potential of the diaspora as a vital resource, the government initiated various programs aimed at fostering connections and facilitating contributions from Ethiopians living overseas.

Policy Improvement

The Ethiopian Diaspora Service has a diaspora policy established in 2013. However, due to the evolving needs of the diaspora and advancements in information technology, there is a pressing need to improve this policy. The first draft of the policy brief was developed by a group of university professors.

The updated policy will effectively address the growing needs of the diaspora and empower the Ethiopian Diaspora Service to meet current demands
